Demetria Irwin is an urban planner turned freelance writer/journalist/budding
author. She is also a hip hop head, wife, yoga
practitioner, world traveler, reality show
junkie, scrapbooker and avid reader.
Raised in a working-class Detroit neighborhood, Demetria was exposed to the harsh realities and unique beauty of urban life at a very young age. Those experiences helped nurture two lifetime loves for Demetria: writing and urban exploration.
After earning a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in urban planning from the University of Michigan, Demetria moved to New York City and started a career as an urban planner while doing a little freelance writing
on the side, mostly album reviews and artist bios. She met the man who
would become her husband at a nightclub (Usher was right. You can find
love in the club!) and they eventually married at a lovely sunset
ceremony in the Caribbean.
After a few years of relegating writing to a side gig, the passion of
the pen took over and Demetria began writing full-time by freelancing
for several print and on-line publications. She landed a staff writer
position at the New York Amsterdam News, a century-old publication based in Harlem where she was able to amass over 100 clips on a wide variety of subjects from real estate development to concert reviews. Her work earned her a first place award from the New York Association of Black Journalists for Best Short Feature.
While she is extremely grateful for the opportunity to write for the New York Amsterdam News,
Demetria decided to leave that publication at the end of 2008 and go
back to freelancing full-time and working on the draft of her first novel.
Demetria subscribes to the notion that anything worth doing is worth doing well, whether it's a paragraph on a blog
or a front-page news feature. She looks forward to adding even more
clips to her diverse writing portfolio and is very excited about
sharing her novel and other fiction writing with the world.
